Whether you’re branding your company or yourself, concentrate on using your own voice. Sure, you want to appeal to your audience. But, it’s like your mother used to say: Be yourself and people will like you. This is because we respond to sincerity. When you are genuine, people can tell. So, whether you write your own copy or you hire a writer, don’t try to sound like someone you’re not.
Personal Branding is just another one of those terms marketers came up with to make you feel like you’re not doing all you can to get your name out there. If you haven’t branded yourself and Tweeted and blogged and developed a logo, you’re sunk! Just kidding.
OK, so it’s a little hysterical to think of yourself as a brand. But it is important to have a ready resume, a sturdy cover letter, and an updated LinkedIn profile. Those are the basics.
In certain businesses you need to have some online presence, like a website and maybe a blog putting your expertise out there. How do you know what you need? Well, my rule is if you think you might need it, you do. And if you don’t have time, hire someone. Painless.
